Not until 1862 did the cello sonata re-emerge in the hands of Johannes Brahms. Thedéen does not use a five-string cello for the brilliant D major Suite (No. 6) as do Wispelwey and others, but his playing is still bright and clean, most notably in the special Allemande. He does, though, use the proper scordatura in the C minor Suite (No. 5), which some modern players ignore.

He is professor at the Det Kongelige Danske Musikkonservatorium in Copenhagen. He is also a professor at the Edsberg Academy of Music since 1996 and since 2004 Musica Vitae's artistic adviser. 2010-04-27 Torleif Thedéen and Roland Pöntinen, who with this discs give us the larger part of Schnittke’s chamber music for the cello, are long-time partners whose first joint recording for BIS was made in 1986 – entitled ‘The Russian Cello’, it incidentally included a performance of the first of Schnittke’s cello sonatas. Brahms - Cello Sonatas. Torleif Thedéen and Roland Pöntinen made their first recording together almost 25 years ago and have continued to play together ever since, in recital and on disc. They have recorded works by Prokofiev and Anton Webern, by Shostakovich and Hindemith, by Chopin and Schumann.
